Click here for print friendly version.
In mid to late summer, tubular double-lipped purplish flowers bloom. The lower lip of the flowers have a showy white center and are divided into three lobes while the upper lip is hood-like. The flowers are held above large square-stemmed stalks, typical of mint family plants. The six inch leaves are toothed and covered with fine hairs.
Additional Information:
In the mint family-the stems are square. The seed looks like a cap to some, and the hood-shaped upper lip of each flower explains the common name.
