Helianthus hirsutus (Hairy Sunflower)

Colonizing plant which grows up to four feet tall. The name comes from the stiff hairs on the plant's stem and leaves. Rich yellow flowers are up to three inches in diameter with 8-15 petals. Occurs in rocky to dry woods and savannas, on prairies and in ditches.
