Salix purpurea (Purple Willow)

A stunning shrub for the border. The slender grey-green leaves contrast well with perennials. In winter, young purple stems are outstanding. Cut back to the ground in early spring to retain willowy effect and purple color. Older stems are grey-brown or cane-coloured, all twigs hairless. Catkins in early Spring, in more or less opposite pairs, on very short stalks, with black-tipped scales.
