Alisma plantago-aquatica (Water Plantain)

A flowering plant native to most of the Northern Hemisphere including Europe, northern Asia and North America. Plants grow in shallow water and consist of a fibrous root, several basal leaves and a triangular stem. Branched clusters of numerous small lavender flowers.

Additional Information:
The genus name "alisma" is said to be a word of Celtic origin meaning "water", a reference to the habitat in which it grows. Early botanists named it after the plantain because of the similarity of their leaves.
