Celtis occidentalis (Hackberry)

A reliable, fast-growing, all-purpose shade tree which is pyramidal when young then develops a broad crown with ascending branches. The leaves are medium green. Fall foliage is a soft yellow. Birds and wildlife relish the small, round, orange-red or purple fleshy fruit that forms September-October. Adaptable to a variety of soils, hackberry frequently grows in limestone soils and on limestone outcrops. Because of its drought resistance, it is used as a street tree in many midwestern cities.
