Matteucia struthiopteris
Matteucia struthiopteris
Common Name: Ostrich Fern
In late spring, this fern unfurls tall fronds that provide a nice canopy of contrast to blooming ephemerals. This very popular large fern has an elegant vase-shape and is often found in open shade gardens. Keeping to its namesake, the long arching light-medium green leaves are similar to ostrich plumes: slender at the base but widening dramatically before the tip. It is a deciduous fern and spreads widely by underground runners.
