Hercules Wall

Click here for print friendly version.

Local-source native plants are excellent choices for your Hercules wall project.

There are more benefits to using Hercules than just the block price on bid day! Compared to the same walls built with a traditional closed face system, Hercules walls will use less geogrid ---- both in lighter strengths and shorter lengths. Shorter lengths means less overdig for the grid placement, less import and placement of the fill in the grid zone and less compaction time all of which means less equipment and labor cost. Also, because of the high unit coverage of the blocks themselves, base course is laid faster and the wall is built faster due to the stacking nature of the Hercules system. The Hercules "Mite" is a smaller block for residential and small commercial projects and the "Neptune" is a heavy-duty block for projects that may come in contact with water and wave action.

The Hercules wall is great for:

Soil stabilization
Adding Beauty
Providing a noise baffle

Critical Site Products (Critsite) is the largest producer of containerized native plants in the Midwest offering over 600 species. Our 2 X 2 X 5" deep cell plants are perfectly sized to plant a Hercules wall quickly and economically. All Critsite-produced plants are local-source and are grown at one of our four production facilities using the air root pruning technique (APM) to create vigorous, fast-growing plants. Critsite will custom-grow species and sizes to fit any need. Critsite also grows a small collection of non-native plant species often used in commercial landscapes.

Some of the native species we recommend for your Hercules project are: Leadplant (Amorpha canascens), Butterfly Milkweed, (Asclepias tuberosa), Lanceleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata), Pale Purple Coneflower (Echinacea pallida), Purple Coneflower (Echnacea purpurea), Missouri Primrose (Oenothera macrocarpa), Squaw-weed (Senecio obovatus) , Cliff Goldenrod (Solidago drummondii), Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), Sideoats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula), and Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis).

Critsite announces a new product for the industry called the Prairie Star Patch. The patch will be fabricated from biodegradable wood fiber blanket impregnated with one of our custom-blended seed mixes, soil inoculant and micronutrients and cut to fit a Hercules or Neptune cell. The patch will come with two biodegradable staples to insure soil contact is maintained. The patch provides an excellent germination medium, conserves moisture and helps prevent weeds. Watch for more information about the Prairie Star Patch available exclusively through Critical Site Products.
