Juncus effusus
Soft Rush
This species occurs in wet soils along stream edges, sloughs, ponds, lakes and in bottomland forests. It is also found in mesic upland prairies, wet pastures and ditches. This common species is easy to identify becasue of its inflorescence, which seems to come from the side of the stem. Blooms occur from May through September. The plants will naturalize forming large clumps when left undisturbed.

Home Owner Growing and Maintenance Tips:
Needs ample moisture and grows well in standing water up to about 4" deep. Plants are often slow to establish, but once established will slowly spread by rhizomes. Plant in containers in water gardens to control possible unwanted spread.
An attractive asset in the home landscape or rain gardens.
