Castilleja coccinea
Castilleja coccinea
Common Name: Indian Paintbrush
Bright red flower clusters for many weeks in spring and early summer. Excellent butterfly and hummingbird nectar food source. Indian Paintbrush is best established in a complex prairie environment because it is difficult to propagate and transplant. One theory about this concludes that it is partially parasitic, feeding on the roots of several prairie plants.
